Yerba Mate Brewing Method #1 - Gourd and Bombilla
With all of the proven health benefits of yerba mate, from improved athletic performance to weight loss management, it’s no surprise that you may want to be a regular consumer of it!
Luckily, there are three main ways you can brew yerba mate. Some are more traditional than others, but all will give you that much needed mate fix when you need it.
Yerba Mate Brewing Method #1 - Gourd and Bombilla
The first and most obvious way to brew yerba mate is how it has been brewed for centuries - with hot water in a gourd and sipped through a filtered straw called a bombilla.
With this method, you’ll want to:
- Fill the gourd with loose leaf yerba mate a little more than halfway full
- Move all the mate to one side of the gourd
- Pour some cool water in the gourd to moisten the yerba mate
- Insert the bottom of the bombilla at the bottom of your gourd
- Pour hot water between 150-170 degrees Fahrenheit and enjoy!
One thing to note with this method is being careful with the temperature of the water. When drinking through a straw your mouth cannot protect your throat from the hot temperatures and you can burn your throat. Repeated burning of the throat has been connected to throat cancers.
Yerba Mate Brewing Method #2 - Loose Leaf Tea
The next method would be using loose leaf tea in a more modern loose leaf tea brewing kit. These can come in many shapes and sizes, but the main premise is keeping your tea in some sort of separate filtered area that allows the leaves to steep while also being able to easily remove them when you’re ready to consume it.
You’ll want to follow the same water temperature guidelines here of using hot water about 150-170 degrees Fahrenheit, allow the leaves to steep for about 5-7 minutes and enjoy!
Yerba Mate Brewing Method #3 - Normal Tea Bag
While not completely traditional, we believe the easiest way to consume yerba mate is with tea bags! No extra equipment necessary, just your mug and the yerba mate tea bags. Easy brewing, easy removal and easy clean up process.
Again, you’ll still want to brew with hot water between 150-170 degrees Fahrenheit and allow the tea bag to steep for about 5-7 minutes before consuming. The best part about mate is you can always reuse and re-steep the same tea over and over again in one sitting. And a tea bag makes that even easier.
